Another point is that biofuel should not deprive food production of land. Thus new land usage is needed, the one which is not ploughed yet, as ploughing realeases CO2 unless the right measures are taken. That’s why “sustainable biomass growing” is required. Also Mr. Lerminiaux presented the economics of sustainable biomass growing, collecting and pelleting for straw, reed and switchgrass as biomass source.<\/p>\n
The organizers of the conference were Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and Scientific Engineering Centre “Biomass”. 180 specialists from 24 countries attended the conference including 37 persons from abroad (Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Great Britain, Belgium, Macedonia, Austria, the USA and other countries), 128 from Ukraine and 15 from CIS. Professional staff members included representatives from government, research and educational institutions, consulting and commercial firms, industries, public environmental organizations.<\/p>\n
The purpose of the conference was to promote greater use of biomass energy and the development of bioenergy technologies in Ukraine. The conference covered a wide range of issues associated with biomass energy: biomass resources, research and development of bioenergy technologies, demonstration and commercial projects using biomass, the question of legislation, strategy and financing bioenergy projects, economic and environmental aspects of energy production technologies from biomass.<\/p>\n
60 papers (51 oral and nine in the form of presentations) were presented at the conference. The program included plenary sessions, oral and poster presentations, panel discussions and two thematic seminars “Gathering and utilization of biogas at the landfills of Ukraine: the first results, problems and prospects” and “Certification of biomass with compliance to the sustainable development criteria.” In general, the Seventh International Conference “Biomass for Energy” has demonstrated a high level of interest from the representatives of scientific, industrial and commercial areas in further improvements of bioenergy technologies and implementation issues to ensure sustainable and environmentally friendly energy production from biomass and biofuels.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Dave Young, Chairman of EUEA Board and Loic Lerminiaux, member of EUEA Board, took part in the Seventh International Conference “Biomass for Energy” held in Kiev on September 20-21, 2011. Mr. Lerminiaux made the presentation of “Pellets for Power”. The presentation was made as a part of the Dutch programme for biofuel sustainability certification.
