“Put a price on carbon. Nature can’t pay that price anymore”, – Ursula von der Leyen European Commission President commented yesterday on the first day of COP26.
On November 1, 2021, the 26th UN Climate Conference began in Glasgow, Scotland, COP26 – a summit that brings the parties together to accelerate action to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. For two weeks, world leaders will discuss the problem of global warming and actions to solve it.
Key messages from the 1st day of COP 26:

- India surprised with a 2070 net-zero goal. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India will reach zero emissions by 2070 and that half of India’s electricity will come from renewable sources by 2030.
- Vietnam also pledges to go net-zero. Vietnamese Prime Minister Chinh Minh Pham said his country aims to reduce its net greenhouse gases to zero by 2050.
- More nations agree to cut methane emissions. The Global Methane Pledge, a commitment to cut emissions of one of the most potent greenhouse gases by 30% by the end of the decade, has now signed up around 80 nations.
- Brazil, long a climate laggard, sets out a new roadmap. Environment Minister Joaquim Leite said the country will aim for carbon neutrality by 2050. “Today we present a new, more ambitious climate target, going from 43% to 50% by 2030, and carbon neutrality by 2050,” he said in a statement online.
- President Joe Biden wants $3 billion a year of U.S. climate finance to go toward helping vulnerable nations adapt to rising seas, droughts and other consequences of global warming.
