Green housing: expensive today, more expensive tomorrow.
Why green construction is essential now?
The SMARTER4EU project is an initiative aimed at launching new green financing programs in the European Union and its candidate countries. The goal is to develop effective, locally managed, and self-sustaining programs focused on green buildings and green mortgages (GHGM). The pilot implementation will take place in Portugal, Spain, and Ukraine. As part of the project, existing certification systems will also be adapted to meet the requirements of the EU Taxonomy, which could become the basis for launching green mortgage mechanisms in Ukraine.
On May 22, in Kyiv (city center), the European-Ukrainian Energy Agency (EUEA) will host a special offline event within the SMARTER4EU project to draw attention to the development of green housing in Ukraine in the context of new regulatory requirements, gradual adaptation to EU legislation, and urgent reconstruction needs.. The event will become a platform for discussing how to integrate environmental principles at all stages of construction and restoration, as well as how these processes can be strengthened by financial instruments.
Particular attention will be paid to new standards already in effect: as of April 1, the requirements for nearly zero-energy buildings (NZEB) have officially come into force in Ukraine. During the event, experts will discuss how these standards work in practice, what they mean for new construction and restoration projects, and what challenges market participants face.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore both Ukrainian case studies and European experiences in implementing green projects, which can be adapted to the Ukrainian context. There will also be an analysis of the existing buildings for compliance with EU Taxonomy criteria.
A special focus will be placed on engaging the private sector — without whose active participation, large-scale green construction is impossible. Discussions will include the readiness of producers and developers to meet the new environmental standards.
The event will be held in Ukrainian with simultaneous English translation.
