On December 9, 2022, the EUEA held an expert discussion during which the participants, together with the deputy head of the State Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine, discussed the status of implementation and advantages of the energy management system for the industry of Ukraine; EUEA presented the results of the research within the framework of the project with UNIDO “Industrial Energy Survey: Strengthening Ukraine Industry Energy Security and preparing for Green Recovery interventions”. In the end, the representative of “SILPO-FOOD” shared the company’s own experience in implementing the energy management system.

Kateryna Polyakova, EUEA director, noted opening the discussion that “energy efficiency and energy management are components of Ukraine’s energy security today and will be integral parts of Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction. Energy management allows not only to systematically save resources and analyze their consumption but also to directly help the country during the current energy crisis.”

Viktor Bilko, deputy head of the State Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine, noted: “Industry should be one of the main sectors for saving primary energy. The amount of necessary investments calculated in accordance with the National Action Plan until 2030 (not taking military actions into account) should have amounted to about EUR 12 billion. After the end of the war, we will list our plans and goals, I think these numbers will be much higher.”

Mr. Bilko emphasized that energy management is the best tool for increasing the level of energy efficiency of companies because it allows them to constantly improve the conditions of the enterprise, reduce energy costs, and improve competitiveness. According to the Law of Ukraine “On Energy Efficiency”, an energy audit for large business entities must be conducted every 4 years unless a certified energy management system has been implemented. The first energy audit should be conducted by November 2024. Many Ukrainian enterprises are already interested in energy management. For example, according to the international standardization organization “ISO” as of 2021 38 companies in Ukraine have implemented a certified energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001, and 298 enterprises have implemented environmental management systems in accordance with ISO 14001.”

Pavlo Pertko, UNIDO’s energy efficiency expert, during the discussion, outlined the process of implementing energy efficiency at the enterprise and its cycles. “The energy management system, firstly, generates energy efficiency measures by itself, secondly, it always helps the enterprise to optimize the energy consumption systems that are in the enterprise by analyzing them and achieving better indicators, thirdly, functioning from year to year EnMS is improving itself.”

“Most successful enterprises implemented the following steps: the position of an energy manager, mathematical modeling in the process of energy efficiency analysis, and training within the framework of the UkrIEE project. They have allocated resources for the implementation of EnMS and used the UNIDO tool as a means to implement EnMS”.

Valentyna Huch-Denysenko, EUEA energy efficiency expert, presented the results of the project with UNIDO “Industrial Energy Survey: Strengthening Ukraine Industry Energy Security and preparing for Green Recovery interventions”, which was conducted on the basis of a survey of enterprises regarding their condition, the impact of a full-scale war on their activities, and the process of implementing EnMS at enterprises. 32 enterprises of various industries took part in the survey.

As of the end of summer 2022, 13% of surveyed enterprises have implemented an energy management system. According to research, 41% of enterprises plan to implement EnMS, and 28% of surveyed enterprises are not interested in implementing EnMS, which indicates that not all enterprises understand the benefits of implementation.

As for the energy audit, the situation is very similar to the implementation of EnMS, namely, 13% of enterprises in the industrial sector have already conducted an energy audit, about 40% plan to conduct an energy audit, and 9% are not interested. The majority of enterprises, namely 84% of the respondents, are positive about the implementation of relevant energy-efficient measures and are currently at the stage of searching for and attracting investments,” said Valentyna.

“The success of the operation of any enterprise is first of all closely related to the use of energy resources”, – noted Bohdan Deyko, head of the energy management department of “SILPO-FOOD” during the event and shared the experience of implementing EnMS at the enterprise.

«In order to optimize the consumption of energy resources and increase energy efficiency, enterprises can implement EnMS. Our company has been following the path of energy saving and sustainable development in general for a long time. It is worth noting that currently “SILPO-FOOD” does not have an energy management certification according to ISO50001. The enterprise has introduced an energy management system, which has 4 main stages: energy planning, implementation of energy-saving projects, verification and control of results, management analysis and optimization.

Among the examples of implemented energy consumption optimization projects, Bohdan Deyko noted the following:

1 – Replacement of fluorescent lamps of refrigerating furniture with LED. As a result: savings of 2.5 times the volume of electricity consumption of the equipment.

2- Replacement of accent MHL lamps with LED in trading rooms. As a result: saving up to 50% of the volume of electricity consumption by the equipment. The service life of the equipment has increased from 9,000 hours to 50,000 hours. etc.

A separate successful project is the construction of the Silpo Recycling “Green” store in Sofiivska Borshchagivka, the goal of engineering systems is the use of energy-efficient modern technologies based on renewable energy sources. This project uses innovative and energy-saving technical solutions, such as a geothermal heat pump, rooftop solar power plant, CO2 cooling system, outdoor lighting using solar panels and batteries, charging stations for electric cars, etc. This store is the only supermarket in Ukraine that has passed BREEAM “green” construction certification.
